Mokelumne Hill

Mokelumne Hill is a sleepy, picturesque town located on a moutaintop above the Mokelumne River. Originally, only a trading post was perched on the hill (named after the Muquelemne Indians), but as Americans, French, Chileans, and Chinese miners rushed into the area, the emerging town took the name of the hill. "Mok Hill", as it was commonly known, was the Calaveras County seat from 1852 to 1866. After placer mining died down, hard-rock quartz and hydraulic mining were attempted, but the town faded away in the mid-1860's.

Mokelumne Hill is 12 km southeast of Jackson along CA-49.
